About Rio Grande Wild and Scenic River

Rio Grande Wild and Scenic River

The Rio Grande Wild and Scenic River encompasses a scenic and rugged portion of the Rio Grande River in west Texas, stretching over 196 miles through some of the wildest landscapes in the state. The river flows from the western boundary of Big Bend National Park and continues downstream to the Terrell/Val Verde County line. It is framed by towering canyon walls and contrasts dramatically with the surrounding Chihuahuan Desert. This area is home to diverse wildlife, including peregrine falcons, river otters, and a wide array of desert flora. The river's designation as Wild and Scenic helps protect its free-flowing condition and outstanding natural beauty. Recreation opportunities abound here, from river rafting and kayaking in challenging rapids to hiking along the rugged canyon trails. Visitors to the Rio Grande Wild and Scenic River can explore its dramatic landscapes, witness its wildlife, and experience the serene beauty of a desert river ecosystem that has remained virtually unchanged for hundreds of years.
